The Life Edit: How to Curate Your Home Like a High-End Boutique
Do you know the feeling of walking into a high-end boutique? There is an art to the curation of those luxury experiences. Less does indeed mean more. It allows us to focus only on what is important. The best shops have only one or a few of each item on display. Less visual clutter. Less to consider. Less overwhelm.
While we love our possessions, it can occasionally feel as if our homes are a bit too… populated.
In these moments I LOVE a good life edit. Everything is considered as optional and my aim is to keep only the best of everything. It should be both useful and enjoyable in some way. What PURPOSE does it serve? I do this edit a LOT and it is quite liberating. With the season shifting, this is the perfect time to adopt the energy of a tightly curated luxe retailer and eliminate the fuss and clutter keeping you from feeling the bliss of a freshly edited home.
From your wardrobe to your kitchen cabinets and even your bathroom drawers, it's time to take a deep edit of everything you own and surround yourself only with the things that bring you joy.
At first, the idea of purging may seem daunting. I get it! But trust the process. The exhilaration of being surrounded by only the things you truly love is absolutely worth the effort.
So... are you ready? Here is a quick plan how to begin curate your home like a high-end boutique:
Start with your wardrobe: Go through every item of clothing you own and be honest with yourself. Haven't worn that dress in over a year? Donate it. Tired of those shoes? Sell them on consignment or donate them too. Only keep the pieces that make you feel fabulous.
HERE’S THE CATCH: I want you to empty your closet FIRST. Yes. Don’t simply hold items up and toss the things you don’t want. No. I have had best success over the years REMOVING EVERYTHING and then deciding what is WORTHY of keeping. That’s right. A truly fresh palette. A clean sweep. What items are fabulous enough and useful enough to KEEP and earn a spot. Trust me — this small difference is a massive mindset shift.Next, streamline your beauty or toiletry collection: Personal grooming and makeup products can add up quickly, but how many of them do you actually use? Simplify your routine by sticking to products that work for you and make you feel amazing. Plus, you'll save time and money in the long run. BONUS for (you guessed it) starting with empty drawers, wiping them down, placing everything on surfaces and lining your drawers. NEXT, add in drawer organizers or baskets and ONLY put back things which are essential or garner your fully “must have” approval.
Now, the kitchen: When was the last time you used that fancy gadget collecting dust in the back of your pantry? Or what about those extra baking sheets and pans? Keep only the pots, pans, and tools which are of great quality and in good condition. Thin the herd. Consider donating the excess. A decluttered kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a true pleasure.
AFTERWARDS: Only invest in quality pieces. Yes, some things may be ready for replacement. When you do need (or choose) to add something new to your home, make it count. My grandmother taught me this simple rule: “Buy once. Cry once.” Meaning, invest in the very best you can afford at the time. It will last much longer and you will benefit from having high-quality pieces in your daily life. Opt for high-quality, timeless pieces that you know you will love for years to come. Not only will they elevate your space, but they'll also save you money in the long run by not having to constantly replace cheaper, disposable items.
Remember, the key to curating your home is to surround yourself with things that you love and serve a purpose. We suspect those old gym shoes and scratched pans serve neither of those goals and are easy to eliminate.
The result of the Life Edit is not just a clean, refreshed home — it’s a sense of peace and purpose. We recommend this process at LEAST once a year, but ideally twice. Consider tackling areas such as hall closets, garages and home offices the next time to keep a good rotation going. Your closet & kitchen will be light and airy until next year.
We may not be minimalists, but we can all agree less is sometimes so much more.
